Early security-minded people often relied on watch dogs to protect them. Eventually some began to use chimes, bells and other tricks to warn of intruders. In 1852, a man named Edwin Holmes invented the first alarm system. It involved a tripwire and a solenoid. Then in the 1980's, with infrared technology, motion sensors became the security tactic of choice.They weren't fool-proof however and had to be wired into the home, which could be expensive. It also meant they were dependent on power and phone lines that could be easily cut.
